Established
in 1972, the Department of Pediatrics flourished under the
leadership of founding chairman Lewis A. Barness, M.D., a
renowned scientist and educator. During his 16 years at the
Department's helm, he recruited many outstanding clinicians
and investigators and was instrumental in developing comprehensive
child health services in the Tampa area.
Robert A. Good, Ph.D.,M.D.,D.Sc., joined the Department in
1985 as chairman for the St. Petersburg campus, at All
Children's Hospital. Formerly
the director of the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center,
Dr. Good was recognized as one of the fathers of modern immunology
and a pioneer in the field of transplantation. Dr. Good passed
away in June, 2003.
When Dr. Barness left the chairmanship in 1988, leadership
was passed first to John S. Curran, M.D. and then to Herbert
H. Pomerance, M.D. Dr. Curran had been Chief of Neonatal Services
for many years, and served as Acting Chairman from 1988 to
1990. Dr. Pomerance had come to USF after serving as Chairman
of Pediatrics at the West Virginia University School of Medicine/Charleston,
and served as Interim Chairman in 1990 and 1991.
The departments were united
in 1991 under the leadership of a new chairman, Jaime L. Frias,
M.D., a respected academician and pediatric geneticist. Dr.
Frias enhanced many programs and launched exciting changes,
including construction of a new outpatient facility in Tampa
and the merging of the pediatric residency programs. Thanks
to major donations from the All Children's Hospital Foundation
and matching state funds, the Department established four
new endowed chairs and constructed a premier research facility
on the All Children's Hospital campus.
